A silver plated, engine turned pocket lighter by Dunhill. This elegant and refined piece was named the "Sylph", made by one of the leading names in smoking accessories; Alfred Dunhill. This is the finest, slimmest pocket model that the brand produced. The body is a fine rectangle with soft, rounded, edges covered in barley pattern of engine turning. The Sylph came in four sizes; Standard (this example), Medium, Small, Baby.
This fuel filled wick, lift arm lighter is wonderful in the hand, and perhaps the best lighter with which to light cigars from, in the comfort of the home. Robust, very easy to operate with large lift arm mechanism with flint wheel, producing a fine flame, it can also be used in the home for lighting fires or candles. Purely on design and form it also makes for a beautiful object in itself.
This lighter is fully operational with cotton wick. The base has a removable screw which has a wadding for the petrol which will need to be filled. There is a brand-new flint fitted. The condition is just very lightly used, but wonderful throughout, which is unusual with engine turned bodies, as any damage is magnified by the Barley pattern.
The Sylph model was introduced into the Dunhill line in 1953. Making this one of the last petrol fuelled new models to be introduced by the company. This beautiful design is believed to have been created by French master, Guillon, and looking at it, it is the creation of an eye of superior ability. Made in England, circa 1950's.
