A silver plate chainlink bar tray with engine turned center. This super quality and very rare piece is the perfect bar tray for a cocktail shaker and group of Martini or cocktail glasses to sit. Very industrial in its design influence, it can sit in the most modern of environments.
This tray is a continuation of a pattern that was introduced in the 1930/40's into certain pieces by Hermès, and was seen in a number of home pieces during this time. There is no doubt that the influence in using the chainlink originated from the revolutionary French industrial designer; Jean Després. Després used chain in many of his home pieces and jewellery, ranging from cutlery to trays. There is no direct lineage to Hermès and Després, but his work during the early to mid twentieth century certainly inspired the designers at Hermès.
The tray was made by the French manufacturers Ravinet D'Enfert for Hermès. They were large scale silversmiths in France and were contracted by Hermès to make home goods for the luxury atelier during the mid 20th Century.
The piece is fully singed on the side of the back of the last frame, along with D'Enfert's makers mark. The quality and feel is of what has come to be expected of the brand, and the condition is excellent throughout. Made in France, circa 1960's.
